The regions correspondend more or less to the historical area of Transylvania have as you can see good investments rates. The number of inhabitants is also big and the unemployment rate is the lowest in the country, after Bucharest.
Local budgets are considerably higher comparing to other regions.
Transylvania contains one of the biggest and richest cities of the country, a big population and an economic social and cultural development unlike any other region of Romania. According to the 2002 census, Transylvania has a population of 7,221,733 with a large Romanian majority (74.69%), in addition to which there are also sizeable Hungarian (19.60%), Roma (3.39%), German (0.73%) and Serb (0.1%) communities. It can be perceived as the bridge between the Eastern Europe and the Western culture and civilization. In terms of infrastructure, the Pan-European corridor 4 is crossing Transylvania.

Transylvania is rich in mineral resources, notably lignite, iron, lead, manganese, gold, copper, natural gas, salt and sulfur. There are large iron and steel, chemical and textile industries and opportunities. Stock raising, agriculture, wine production and fruit growing are also important occupations. Timber is an important resource, since Transylvania is mostly a mountain area and woods have always been a definition of the landscape.

Sibiu has been chosen to be the Cultural Capital of Europe this year together with Luxemboug (with which Sibiu has strong economic bounds).
